The bottom line: US Mobile wins on value, but only if you pick AT&T’s network
Truthfully, US Mobile wins almost every category outright, and it’s difficult to point to a place where AT&T comfortably wins this comparison.
Budget shoppers and average users will get much more value at a lower price with US Mobile. US Mobile's Unlimited Starter plan costs $25/month and includes unlimited premium data with a 20GB hotspot on its Dark Star (AT&T) network. AT&T's cheapest comparable plan—Value 2.0—costs $50/month for just 5GB of full-speed data and a 3GB hotspot. If you pick US Mobile’s Verizon or T-Mobile networks instead, you get much lower premium data and hotspot allotments. While those options still beat AT&T on price, it’s a lower value overall.
Where AT&T pulls ahead is its family plans for heavy data users and the fact that it offers device installment plans. AT&T is the better choice if your family needs a ton of mobile data and large hotspot allotments for things like remote work, mobile gaming, or streaming on the go. Its family plans can also offer a bit more value since US Mobile doesn’t include a multi-line discount with its family plans. Additionally, if you need a new phone, US Mobile does not offer installment plans or bill credits to help make the device more affordable. Instead, you’ll have to either pay out of pocket or secure third-party financing, which can be incredibly expensive if you need to buy phones for the entire family.

US Mobile's rating details
US Mobile's biggest strength is what you get for the price: generous data allotments, massive hotspots, and international data, all bundled into plans at a cost that undercut competitors like AT&T.
During my testing, I was particularly impressed with the fast data speeds, where I saw download speeds up to 488Mbps. I tested the carrier across urban and rural North Carolina, and even took it abroad to test its international connectivity. I also felt that US Mobile’s access to all three major networks was a major perk, though switching between them took more time than I anticipated.

AT&T's rating details
Kevin has been an AT&T customer for over 15 years and tested it extensively. It held up everywhere he used it, from urban California to rural New England. Its 5G download speeds were extremely fast at up to 236Mbps, and he had strong enough coverage for calls, texts, and browsing even in more rural stretches of the country.
While AT&T has strong coverage and data speeds, its pricing structure is still extremely expensive unless you have a family plan. A single-line plan of Elite 2.0 can cost up to $110/month for the same high-speed data allotment you’ll find on US Mobile’s Unlimited Premium plan for $44/month, and it doesn’t even offer any perks. That said, adding more lines to AT&T’s family plans unlocks steep multi-line discounts that can undercut US Mobile, and it offers device installment plans to help customers afford new phones.

US Mobile vs. AT&T pricing and plans
Both carriers offer premium unlimited plans and family plans, but only US Mobile offers limited data plans for customers who don’t need much data.
US Mobile has two monthly unlimited plans. When on the Dark Star (AT&T) network, the US Mobile Unlimited Starter plan runs $25/month with unlimited premium data and a 20GB mobile hotspot, while the Unlimited Premium plan jumps to $44/month for unlimited premium data and a 100GB hotspot.
AT&T offers four different postpaid unlimited plans. Its lineup starts at $50/month for Value 2.0's 5GB of full-speed data and a 3GB hotspot, then tops out at $110/month for Elite 2.0's truly unlimited premium data and 250GB hotspot.

Premium unlimited plans: AT&T vs. US Mobile
For average customers, US Mobile offers massive unlimited data allotments and high-speed mobile hotspots at a much more affordable price than AT&T. While the Unlimited Starter plan’s unlimited data and 20GB mobile hotspot will easily meet the needs of most people for just $25/month, Unlimited Premium plan at $44/month essentially matches the data allotments found with AT&T Premium 2.0 for less than half the cost.
For both price and data allotments, AT&T’s Value 2.0 and Extra 2.0 plans are no match for US Mobile. Where AT&T manages to pull ahead is with its mobile hotspot allotments. For customers who need massive hotspot allotments for things like remote work or 4K UHD streaming, the AT&T Elite 2.0 plan is one of the only plans on the market that offers 250GB of high-speed hotspot data.

Limited and flexible plans
US Mobile also sells four limited-data plans for lighter users or customers who want a talk and text plan. Each includes access to all three of US Mobile's networks and can be converted into a shared family plan for an additional $8/line.

Perks comparison
AT&T is unique in the major carrier world in that it’s essentially eliminated all of its perks. The days of getting free HBO Max, cloud storage, or other services are over. Because US Mobile manages to offer perks—in very specific circumstances—it is one of the few MVNOs that manages to beat a major carrier like AT&T in the perks category.
US Mobile packs in more extras than most MVNOs, though some require an annual commitment or specific family plan to unlock:
- Streaming subscription credit: Included with 3+ lines on the monthly Unlimited Premium plan (not available on the annual version)
- International data: Up to 20GB of roaming data on Unlimited Premium; Unlimited Starter includes 1GB/month on the annual plan
- Network switching: Unlimited Premium plan includes free network switches at any time
AT&T's lone remaining major perk is Active Armor, a spam- and robocall-blocking feature. The carrier does still offer unlimited texting and high-speed data in 20 Latin American countries when traveling, but that perk is tied to the pricey Premium 2.0 and Elite 2.0 plans.
Family plan comparison: AT&T offers multi-line discounts, but US Mobile does not
US Mobile's unlimited plans carry no multi-line discount, so every line costs the same $25/month (Starter) or $44/month (Premium) whether you have one line or four. For smaller families, US Mobile is generally a cheaper option than AT&T.

AT&T's Unlimited Your Way plan lets you mix and match tiers per line, with per-line pricing dropping as you add lines. Family plans are the best way to make AT&T more affordable, especially for larger families. In fact, on the Value 2.0 and Extra 2.0 plans, getting a four-line family plan actually makes the carrier’s pricing competitive with US Mobile’s family plans.

US Mobile vs. AT&T coverage and data speeds

You’ll have excellent coverage on AT&T and US Mobile. As a major carrier, AT&T runs its own networks, which are the second-largest 4G LTE and 5G networks in the nation.
As an AT&T MVNO, US Mobile rents service from major carriers like AT&T. While we’ve primarily focused on the Dark Star (AT&T) network to offer data allotment comparison points to AT&T, remember US Mobile also offers service on the T-Mobile and Verizon networks. That access is technically the reason that US Mobile offers better coverage, as Verizon’s 4G LTE and T-Mobile’s 5G networks are larger than AT&T’s. Plus, you can purchase the Multi-Network add-on that lets you connect to multiple networks at once and always have the strongest coverage.
AT&T still offers the second-largest 4G LTE and 5G networks in the nation, so it has excellent coverage and data speeds if you pick that network instead, whether on US Mobile or straight from the source.
While you can pick whatever network you want on US Mobile, the carrier doesn’t specifically tell you which network belongs to which carrier during sign up. US Mobile’s nicknames for all of its networks are:
- Dark Star is the AT&T network
- Warp is the Verizon network
- Light Speed is the T-Mobile network
Finally, before diving into speeds, US Mobile's Unlimited Premium plan on the Dark Star network runs on AT&T's QCI8 tier. This is the same priority level AT&T's own postpaid plans use, so Dark Star traffic isn't deprioritized the way most MVNO traffic typically is. That essentially means that US Mobile’s Unlimited Premium plan is treated just like a standard AT&T plan, so it should remain faster during periods of network congestion.
4G LTE service: US Mobile wins with the Warp network

It’s difficult to declare a true winner, but US Mobile barely wins the 4G LTE coverage battle because it can access the Verizon 4G LTE network. Covering 70% of the nation, it’s the largest 4G LTE network of any major carrier, and it offers excellent coverage to both cities and rural areas. We’ve typically seen 4G LTE data speeds from Verizon averaging around 30–50Mbps during our testing across Verizon MVNOs.
However, AT&T also offers an excellent 4G LTE network. It covers 68% of the country, which is just short of Verizon’s total coverage area. During our testing, Kevin saw download speeds of 25Mbps in rural Brewster, MA, which is still fine for calls, texts, and browsing. Picking the AT&T network for US Mobile will still provide a solid experience for most people.
5G service: US Mobile wins with the Light Speed network

Which carrier you select for 5G coverage largely comes down to whether you prefer a larger 5G coverage area or faster speeds.
US Mobile’s Light Speed (T-Mobile) access once again narrowly gives it the win over AT&T. Since T-Mobile has the nation’s largest 5G network at a 53% coverage area, it does offer faster speeds in more places than AT&T’s 29% map. During my US Mobile testing on the Light Speed network, I saw download speeds up to 346Mbps and had solid coverage throughout urban areas. That said, during a trip to rural areas of the North Carolina mountains, I did experience dead zones and slower speeds.
Once again, it’s important to remember that AT&T still has a strong 5G network. While smaller, it actually relies on more ultra-wideband towers than T-Mobile does. That means while AT&T’s coverage area isn’t as large, it can offer faster speeds in many of the areas it serves.
During my US Mobile testing, I saw faster download speeds at 488Mbps on the Dark Star network than I did on Light Speed. While that 5G coverage wasn’t as widely available, I generally had a better experience on it and would select it as my network since I live in a rural area where AT&T has stronger service.

Kevin’s testing of the AT&T 5G network also showed fast speeds, including 226Mbps in Philadelphia, PA, and 236Mbps in Oceanside, CA. Those are fast enough for HD streaming, gaming, and video calls without issue.
Customer service
US Mobile is an online-only carrier, offering support via phone, email, chatbot, and live chat, all available 24/7. I never waited long for help on either channel, and the carrier holds a 4.6 rating on Trustpilot across more than 3,500 reviews.
Kevin’s experience with AT&T’s customer service was mixed. He did not have a pleasant experience attempting to contact a customer service agent by phone, and it took three different phone calls before he finally got help. That said, AT&T does have one customer service element that US Mobile can’t match: a nationwide network of in-person stores. If you need help picking a plan, want to browse phones, or need troubleshooting assistance, you don’t actually have to wait on hold for the next representative. You can simply jump in the car and visit your local AT&T store.

While they were ultimately helpful, getting a real person on AT&T's phone line took Kevin three separate attempts over more than a week.
"Frustratingly, it took me three attempts to get a real person on the line…The customer service representative was helpful and kind, answering all my questions about add-ons, fees, and phone financing. Bottom line and recap
If you need AT&T coverage, US Mobile is simply the better choice for most customers. Compared to AT&T’s postpaid plans, it offers much cheaper options with similar-sized data allotments. Plus, considering that AT&T no longer offers much in the way of perks, US Mobile’s plans have more value for the price. US Mobile is simply one of the best MVNOs on AT&T’s network.
AT&T may still be the best choice for larger families, people who need large mobile hotspot allotments, and customers who need device installment plans. If you need a family plan for three or more lines, AT&T may be slightly cheaper than US Mobile’s Unlimited Premium plan thanks to AT&T’s generous multi-line discounts.
Additionally, hotspot users who need massive mobile hotspots for tasks like remote work or 4K UHD streaming can get a 250GB allotment with AT&T’s Elite 2.0 plan. Finally, since AT&T offers device installment plans and US Mobile does not, it might make more sense for customers who can’t afford to pay for their new devices out of pocket to select AT&T instead.
Switch to US Mobile or AT&T
If you’re ready to switch, both AT&T and US Mobile make it easy. They require an unlocked, paid-off phone and can handle activation entirely online, so there's no store visit required.
You can easily bring your own device to US Mobile by purchasing a plan and downloading the US Mobile app. The carrier offers eSIM plans for instant activation but can also mail you a physical SIM card if you prefer.
Switching to AT&T follows a similar process as US Mobile. You’ll simply select your plan on the AT&T website, follow the instructions, and the carrier will either activate your device instantly through eSIM or send a physical SIM card. Alternatively, you can also visit your local AT&T store for in-person assistance.
