T-Mobile lays claim to the largest 5G network by covering 51% of the nation. It's far more expansive than the 5G networks of AT&T and Verizon, but includes slower data speeds. This is because T-Mobile primarily relies on low-band spectrum towers, which offer a stronger signal overall at the expense of data speeds. That said, T-Mobile is an excellent choice for 5G service if you have a 5G-compatible device and a T-Mobile unlimited plan.
Here we’ll review T-Mobile's 5G coverage map and compare it with the 5G networks from AT&T and Verizon, plus detail out just how strong their coverage is throughout specific cities and states of the country.
T-Mobile 5G coverage map compared
Covering 51% of the country, T-Mobile’s 5G network coverage blows AT&T's and Verizon's out of the water. But how does its 51% coverage translate to "nationwide" 5G?
While T-Mobile’s 51% 5G coverage would on its surface seem to fall short of what you’d call “nationwide,” in fact its 5G towers cover most of the more populated regions of the U.S. After all, coverage stats take into account square mileage and population density. Consider that T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network covers 62% of the country, and is very well established, built-out, and deserving of the term “nationwide.” So while there's certainly room to grow, T-Mobile’s 5G network can safely claim nationwide status.
Get T-Mobile 5G coverage for half the cost
Many people don't realize they can save on a phone and a phone plan and still get T-Mobile coverage with an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). These carriers use the same towers but don't have to pay for the upkeep costs, thereby passing the savings on to you. Where most free phones from T-Mobile require a new line (or upgrade) on one of their priciest phone plans, an MVNO like Mint Mobile has plans starting as low as $15/month.
With Mint Mobile, you'll get the nation's best 5G (with up to 40GB of guaranteed high speeds), plus unlimited talk, text, and data for a third of the cost of a T-Mobile unlimited plan. And while it's rare to find a truly free phone deal from Mint, you can often find discounted phones or full-priced devices that come with a few months of free service, which save you money in the long run.
Check out how T-Mobile compares to AT&T and Verizon below:
Compare 5G network coverage
| Network | % of country covered | Cities covered | Zip codes covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | 51 | 3,888 | 9,156 |
| AT&T | 33.5 | 1,743 | 7,850 |
| Verizon | 11 | 1,800+ | 6,724 |
| U.S. Cellular | .486 | 0 | 64 |
T-Mobile 5G coverage vs. AT&T
AT&T’s 33.5% national 5G coverage trails T-Mobile’s 51% 5G coverage by miles. For some time, Big Blue was more invested in improving its 4G LTE network than going all-in on 5G—leaving T-Mobile able to get a jump start.
T-Mobile 5G coverage vs. Verizon
While T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G coverage dwarfs AT&T’s, its lead over Verizon is even more substantial. Verizon 5G covers a minuscule 11% of the country. This puts Verizon's service area in last place and trailing significantly behind T-Mobile. That said, Verizon does offer the fastest 5G speeds of any carrier, so you're well set if you can find a signal.
Why is T-Mobile’s 5G network so much bigger than AT&T or Verizon?
T-Mobile’s 5G network build-out strategy heavily favors quantity over quality.
5G technology is made up of low-, mid-, and high-band waves. To cover the most area, T-Mobile relies mostly on 600MHz low-band spectrum. This wavelength allows their 5G signal to reliably cover a wide area and travel through most obstacles (buildings, trees, etc.).
The compromise with low-band spectrum is its speed limitations: it can’t provide the top speeds expected from 5G, instead offering those slightly above 4G LTE. That’s not to say it’s "slow," but it doesn’t live up to the full promise of 5G Ultra Wideband speeds. AT&T is also building the bulk of their network on low-band spectrum, offering similar speeds as T-Mobile.
Verizon has concentrated on using the high-band millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum, which delivers lightning-fast gigabit speeds. The drawback is that mmWaves are extremely short and therefore don’t offer wide coverage, nor can they penetrate objects. This means high-band 5G currently isn't a viable option for building a truly nationwide 5G network. Verizon has finally turned on their low-band spectrum which has given their coverage a bit of a boost.
