Life’s not good for LG smartphones. This past weekend the South Korean electronics giant announced the shuttering of its mobile division, leaving a market that had been and continues to be dominated by Samsung and Apple—two behemoths largely blamed for the shuttering of a handful of other cell phone makers.
Why LG Is Closing Smartphone Operations
In its press release, LG framed this move as a “strategic decision” that will allow the company to focus on the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, AI, and business-to-business solutions. However, it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to see the big picture behind the closure. LG’s mobile division has been operating at a loss for several years, unable to break through the barrier so heavily guarded by the likes of Samsung in the Android market. It’s a move that seemed more inevitable than Thanos could ever hope to be.
When Is LG Shutting Down Mobile?
According to LG’s announcement, it will phase out its mobile division with the goal to have it completely shut down by July 31, with the caveat that some of its inventory may still be available after that date.
LG will continue to provide support and software updates for its existing mobile products for a period of time. The length of this time will vary by region.
LG’s Legacy
LG was making cell phones long before Apple decided to disrupt the entire industry with its iPhone. When the closure of its mobile division is complete, LG will be leaving behind a 25-year legacy of mobile devices.
While LG’s mobile devices never really topped best-smartphone lists, they were often included. The G series and V series of phones were highlights of the LG lineup, featuring flagship-like specs that satisfied but were never really able to top Samsung. Though lacking the fanfare, LG has left a mark in the world of smartphones. It was one of the earliest adopters of slim design and minimal bezels, features that are practically standard in today’s flagship cell phones.
Just this past January at CES, LG announced its intentions to release the first rollable phone that could seamlessly expand from standard size to tablet size. That phone will no longer see the light of day.
Other Android Phones
LG’s departure from mobile devices creates a gaping hole in the Android field, especially for anyone looking for alternatives to Samsung (and its high prices). If you were looking into an LG to replace your current device, you should probably change your mind. We don’t know how long LG will actually continue supporting its phones. Instead, take a look at some of these popular Android phones that aren’t part of the “galaxy.”
