T-Mobile has announced the early launch of their new low-cost prepaid cell phone plan, Connect. The plan, starting at just $15/month, will be available on March 25. The early release is part of T-Mobile’s response to COVID-19 with the understanding that several affected customers are in need of cell phone plans that can keep them connected at a cheap rate. T-Mobile Connect was originally slated to be released after the finalization of their merger with Sprint.
As part of this announcement, T-Mobile stated that they will also make the Connect plan available through Metro by T-Mobile and double the hotspot allowance on Metro’s $35 hotspot plan for the next 60 days.
What’s Included in T-Mobile Connect
The T-Mobile Connect plan includes unlimited talk and text, plus a data allotment of:
- 2GB for $15/month
- 5GB for $25/month
The above are hard data caps. Anyone who uses all of their data before their month of service is up will not be able to use data for the rest of the month. This is in contrast to plans with soft data caps which slow data down once the limit is exceeded.
How T-Mobile Connect Compares to Similarly Priced Plans
T-Mobile Connect is set to be T-Mobile’s cheapest plan, but how does it stack up to other plans in the 15/month price range? Take a look at this comparison table:
T-Mobile $15 Comparison
| Plan | Network | Talk and Text | Data | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile Connect | T-Mobile | Unlimited | 2GB | $15/month |
| Mint Mobile 3-Month (Small) | T-Mobile | Unlimited | 3GB then slowed | $15/month |
| Twigby Unlimited Talk & Text and 3GB of Data | Verizon | Unlimited | 3GB then slowed | $15/month |
| Good2Go Unlimited Talk & Text | AT&T | Unlimited | 2GB then slowed | $15/month |
| Tello Value Plan | Sprint | Unlimited | 2GB then slowed | $14/month |
T-Mobile $25 Comparison
| Plan | Network | Talk and Text | Data | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile Connect | T-Mobile | Unlimited | 5GB | $25/month |
| Mint Mobile 3-Month (Medium) | T-Mobile | Unlimited | 3GB then slowed | $15/month |
| Twigby Unlimited Talk & Text and 5GB of Data | Verizon | Unlimited | 3GB then slowed | $15/month |
| Good2Go Unlimited Talk & Text | AT&T | Unlimited | 6GB then slowed | $20/month |
| Tello Value Plan | Sprint | Unlimited | 6GB then slowed | $24/month |
Plans with similar high-speed data caps are priced just about the same as T-Mobile Connect. However, all of the competing plans have softs caps, whereas T-Mobile’s Connect has a hard cap. Until T-Mobile changes this, they might have a hard time competing with other low-cost cell phone plans.
T-Mobile’s Other Responses to COVID-19
In addition to the early release of Connect, T-Mobile has taken several measures to help those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. T-Mobile is also offering unlimited data to all customers on T-Mobile and Metro wireless data plans for the next two months as well as an additional 20GB of hotspot data.
