How to Switch to Straight Talk & BYOP

Updated

Straight Talk

Straight Talk is a prepaid carrier owned by Verizon, which means you get Verizon's network coverage at prepaid prices. Plans start at just $25 per month with no contract or activation fee, and you can keep your current number, whether you bring your own phone (BYOP) or buy a new one.

In this guide, I'll walk you through the four steps you'll need to switch, then break down Straight Talk's plans, their phone lineup, and the one trade-off their marketing won't tell you about.

How to bring your own phone to Straight Talk

Straight Talk already offers very competitive prices on its plans, but if you want to maximize your savings, your best bet is to bring your phone to Straight Talk rather than purchasing a brand new one for potentially hundreds of dollars. There's even a $25-per-month plan reserved exclusively for BYOP customers, so your phone can help cover the costs. Here's how to cash it in.

Step 1: Leave your current carrier

Before you switch, make sure nothing is tying you to your current carrier. Contracts are mostly extinct, but device payment plans aren't. If you're still paying off your phone, you'll need to settle the remaining balance before your carrier will release it.

Do the math before you switch

Paying off your phone can sting if you're early in a 36-month installment plan, but the sting is worth measuring before you assume it's a dealbreaker. If you're just paying off the phone's price, you lose nothing by paying it early. Just know that most carriers require you to stay on the installment plan for a minimum period, often 60 to 90 days, before they'll accept an early payoff. The real cost shows up when your carrier offers monthly bill credits, because leaving early forfeits any remaining credits.

Here's the formula to find your break-even point:

Forfeited credits ÷ monthly savings = months to break even

Say you're paying $80 per month on a major carrier, and you'd pay $45 on Straight Talk's Silver Unlimited plan. That's $35 in monthly savings. If leaving early costs you $400 in forfeited credits, $400 ÷ $35 comes out to about 11.5 months. After that, every month is pure savings.

Step 2: Unlock your phone for Straight Talk

A locked phone won't work on a new carrier. Some carriers unlock your phone automatically once it's paid off. Others make you ask.

If you need to ask, it usually takes just one call to customer service or a few taps in your carrier's app. If your carrier has minimum requirements before they'll unlock your phone, you'll find those on their website.

Step 3: Check Straight Talk phone compatibility and coverage

Straight Talk runs on the major carrier networks, so most phones make the cut. But don't assume yours does. Run your phone's IMEI through Straight Talk's compatibility checker before you spend a dime.

Coverage works the same way. Straight Talk covers most of the country, but "most" doesn't help you if your house sits in a dead zone. Check the Straight Talk coverage map for your address, not just your city.

Step 4: Activate your phone on Straight Talk

Once your phone clears the compatibility check, pick a plan and a SIM. Phones that support eSIM can activate in minutes by scanning a QR code. Everyone else needs a physical SIM kit, shipped free or for under $5 at Walmart. Enter your SIM number at Straight Talk's activation page or in the My Straight Talk app, and you're live.

Straight Talk plans: prepaid, unlimited, and international options

Straight Talk rebuilt its lineup around three unlimited tiers: Silver, Gold, and Platinum, costing $45, $55, or $65 per month on a single line. All three come with unlimited talk, text, and high-speed data. The differences show up in hotspot data, international calling, and perks. If you want a tier-by-tier breakdown, check out our guide to the best Straight Talk plans.

Gold and Platinum plans include a Walmart+ membership at no extra charge. Walmart+ normally costs $98 per year and includes free delivery, fuel discounts, and a Paramount+ subscription. If you already pay for Walmart+, switching to the $55 Gold plan wipes out that $98 bill, which amounts to about $8 per month in savings on top of whatever you save on the plan itself.

On a tighter budget? Straight Talk's cheapest option is $25 per month, and the lineup includes three lower-priced plans at $25, $30, and $35. The $25 StraightSAVINGS plan is only available to customers who bring their own phone, which makes it the natural landing spot if you followed the BYOP steps above.

Straight Talk also discounts every line you add. A second line on Silver Unlimited saves you $15 a month, and five lines total $100, or $20 per line. Just know the family discount doesn't stack with the Auto Pay discount, so do the math on which one saves you more.

Prepay for more savings

Straight Talk sells Silver Unlimited in 3-, 6-, and 12-month terms, and paying upfront lowers the effective monthly rate below the standard $45. The trade-off is that you're prepaying for service you can't get a refund for, so treat the longer terms as a loyalty discount you give yourself. New customers can also knock the price down by enabling Auto Pay, which is the better move if you're not ready to commit.

Switch to Straight Talk and get a new phone

Don't want to bring a phone? Straight Talk's lineup is better than you'd expect from a prepaid phone carrier.

On the high end, you'll find the current iPhone 17 lineup, including the new iPhone 17e and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. The budget shelf is anchored by Motorola's Moto G series and Samsung's Galaxy A phones, with Walmart regularly dropping prices under $100.

You can buy Straight Talk phones online and in Walmart stores, and the in-store activation deals often save you some cash. We track the latest Straight Talk deals weekly, so check our page before you pay sticker price.

Straight Talk offers monthly payment plans for its more expensive phones, and it doesn't run credit checks to qualify you. Your payment history informs your payment terms instead.

One catch to know before you buy is that phones purchased from Straight Talk are locked to Straight Talk. They become eligible for unlocking 60 days after activation, so factor that in if you like keeping your options open.

Why switch to Straight Talk?

Here's what actually makes the switch worth it:

  • Verizon's network at prepaid prices. Straight Talk is owned by Verizon and runs on Verizon's network, one of the most reliable in the country.
  • Consistent pricing. Straight Talk's $45 plan has carried the same base price since 2009. I can't name another carrier that's left a flagship plan untouched for 17 years.
  • No contracts or hidden fees. Prepaid means no contracts, no activation fee, and no surprise charges. If your needs change, you can switch plans next month.
  • A reward for switching. Bring your own phone and port in your number, and Straight Talk gives you a $50 device credit after 12 months of service.

It is worth noting that, as an MVNO customer, you receive lower network priority than Verizon's direct customers, which heavy data users may notice during periods of congestion. But in our experience, if you mostly text, stream a little, and scroll, you'll likely never feel it.

Switching to Straight Talk: FAQ

Can I use the same number if I switch to Straight Talk?

You can keep your current phone number when you switch to Straight Talk by porting it during activation. The number has to still be active with your current provider, so don't cancel your old service until the transfer finishes. You'll need your 10-digit number, your account number, your transfer PIN, and the billing address on your current account. Most transfers happen quickly, but the port-in process can take up to 7 days.

Do I need a new SIM card to switch to Straight Talk?

Yes, your phone needs a Straight Talk SIM to connect to the network, but that doesn't always mean a physical card. If your phone supports eSIM, you can activate service digitally by scanning a QR code on Straight Talk's website. Older phones or phones without eSIM support will need a physical Straight Talk SIM kit, which replaces your old carrier's card.

Does Straight Talk give free SIM cards?

No, Straight Talk's physical SIM kits are cheap but usually not free. The Keep Your Own Phone SIM kit sells for under $5 at Walmart, and Straight Talk runs frequent promotions that bundle the SIM with a plan purchase online. The closest thing to a truly free SIM is going the eSIM route, since there's no kit to buy.

What is needed to activate a Straight Talk phone?

Activating a Straight Talk phone requires a compatible phone, a Straight Talk SIM or eSIM, and a plan subscription. If you're bringing your own phone, it needs to be unlocked and verified through Straight Talk's IMEI compatibility checker first. From there, activation happens at Straight Talk's website or through the My Straight Talk app, and if you're keeping your number, have your old account details ready for the port.
