On Tuesday, Apple finally revealed details on their eagerly-anticipated new iPhones, and we've found a way to save you $1,080 over 24 months.
The company unveiled two new devices--the radically redesigned iPhone X, and the more modestly upgraded 8.
Before you impulsively sign a carrier lease or installment plan for the iPhone 8, check out this hidden way to get cheap--very, very cheap--service for your new device. Caveat: it requires upfront payment for the phone.
Paying for iPhone 8 Service the Typical Way
The major carriers' iPhone 8 plan prices are coming live as the preorder date approaches, and so far, they're not cheap. Take AT&T, for example.
Let's say you pair AT&T's Unlimited Plus (you're going to want ample data) with an installment plan for the iPhone 8. Here's what your monthly cost will look like:
$124 a month is not cheap, particularly since you'll be obliged to pay it for the next two years.
If you pair an iPhone 8 installment plan with Verizon's $75 Go Unlimited plan, you'll be paying
- $104.16 per month for 24 months.
Also consider that, if you're doing a 24-month installment payoff, by the time the device is yours it will be worth far less than it was when you first signed up for the plan two years prior. An installment plan is just a form of paying off the device over 24 months.
Fortunately, there's another way, a secret hack that nobody's talking about and it will save you $1,419 over 24 months. It requires forking over the full retail price for the iPhone 8 upfront, but this is a hack pays you back.
Hacking the System
Step 1: Purchase for the iPhone 8 outright
First, this won't work if you are already a Sprint customer. You must buy the device from Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile for reasons I'll explain below. Full retail prices are:
- iPhone 8 64GB: $699.99
- iPhone 8 256GB: $849.99
- iPhone 8 Plus 64GB: $799.99
- iPhone 8 Plus 256GB: $949.99
Step 2: Take your iPhone 8 to Sprint and sign up for the hidden $0 Unlimited Freedom plan
Since you're fulfilling Sprint's requirement to bring a device from one of the company's major rivals (the iPhone 8 isn't on their list of eligible devices to bring over yet but there's no reason to expect it won't be) you'll be entitled to a year of free unlimited talk, text and data.
Though you'll be taking something of a financial hit by buying the iPhone 8 upfront, you'll save money--lots of it--in the long run by getting free service from Sprint for a whole year.
Let's say you're on Verizon's $75 Go Unlimited during those 12 months. That's $900 ($75 x 12) that you won't be saddled with.
Once that year of free Sprint service is up, Unlimited Freedom will return to its regular $60/month price, which is still the cheapest unlimited plan among the four majors.
Buy the iPhone 8 for $699 from Verizon. Take it to Sprint for $0 plan (the $0 deal is not valid for getting an iPhone from Sprint on installments - you need to bring your own). You will get $0 for 12 months (excluding taxes and fees). Then on until 9/30/18; you will move to their $60 plan.
Step 3: Do a little celebratory dance (check the math out)
Staying with Verizon on their $75 Unlimited plan for iPhone 8 with installments will cost you:
- $75 for the Verizon Unlimited plan
- $29.16 per month for the iPhone 8 for 24 months (excluding monthly taxes and fees).
- A total of $104.16 per month // a total of $2,499.84 over the 24 months (excluding taxes + fees)
You’d be on this Verizon plan until September 2019.
However, with this Sprint hack, you'd save $1,080 over the same 2 years:
- Pay $699 for the iPhone 8
- Bring it to Sprint on the hidden free plan
- $0 for 12 months on Sprint to September 30, 2018
- When promo expires, you’ll pay $60/mo * 12 months which is $720
- Total cost with this hack is your iPhone 8 ($699) + 12 months of service plan $720 = $1,419
A total saving of $1,080 over 24 months. Yes, you can.
While your iPhone 8-wielding friends are sweating it out with high monthly costs, you'll not only be enjoying free unlimited service, but the comfort of knowing that you own your device free and clear, beholden to no one.
